Hi,
so I was thinking that for the humans there was originally another backstory that was cut out of the game. Excluding the Mage backstory, there is only one human backstory, the human noble. My belief is that there was probably going to be a human commoner backstory that would take place in Redcliffe. There are plenty of characters for the warden to have known or be related to, you could have been nephew of Owen the smith, or possibly related to the girl who asks you to find her brother, maybe you were a servant in the castle. This backstory would also give the warden a sort of initial connection with Alistair, being from his childhood home. The warden could have been whiteness as the Arl took ill, maybe even being accused of poisoning him (giving a pretty good reason for conscription). This type origin was probably scraped in early development because it was too similar to the other origins but it is still something to think about.
I'll take this as an opportunity to point out that the developers had come up with another human origin, the Avvar Barbarian, but it got scrapped. That would've been an interesting window into Avvar culture and their relationship with the Grey Wardens (Duncan has to recruit you after all), but it also would've meant they needed a "closure" moment for that Warden. That means new location and character concepts with a legitimate reason to be there halfway through/towards the end of the game. This overhead led them to just to focus on the Human Noble, and in my humble opinion it is that much better for it and better-woven throughout the rest of the story.
